Plan a rescue operation on foot to Mount Olympus @ 19,000 feet looking for survivors of a climbing expedition. Learning outcomes include strategic planning, data-driven decision making, managing uncertainty and taking calculated risks.

The Game​

  • 10th. May, 12 pm: Peak climbing season on Mount Olympus soaring 19,000 feet above the clouds. There are several climbers queued up near the summit .

  • 10th May, 2 pm: Dark clouds blow in over the horizon with gale force winds that whip the snow and ice into a fierce storm. Visibility drops to a few inches. On the icy peak fifty climbers are struck by the disaster.

  • 11th May: Word of the storm reaches the participants at the Emergency Control at Base Camp. Rescue teams are quickly assembled. The immediate mission is to search for and rescue the survivors. Conditions do not permit helicopters. The mission needs to be accomplished on foot.

 

The Method

Extremely high energy game play. Participants have to:

  • Plan the mission strategy, form teams, assign roles, get supplies, select the optimum route, and execute the rescue mission in a constantly changing environment.
  • Take quick decisions, deal with the uncertain environment and work together to succeed in their mission.
  • Reflection on behavior and performance
  • Detailed debrief
  • Contextualizing behavior and debrief to the work context
